Community Fridge

What is a Community Fridge?

A Community Fridge is a space that brings people together to eat, connect, learn new skills and reduce food waste. It is a site where local people can share food. This includes surplus from Supermarkets, local food businesses, producers, households and gardens. The main purpose of the Fridge is to save fresh food from going to waste. There are currently over 300 fridges in the UK.

A Community Fridge is not a food bank. People usually refer to food banks as an emergency stop gap solution. For some there is a stigma tied to using food banks and there is a cap on the number of visits that can be made by a household within a time period. Generally non-perishable food items are given out, and at set times only, food bank users are not always at liberty to choose what they eat. In contrast, Community Fridges exist to reduce food waste and foster a spirit of sharing and mutual support within a community. They are often open more regularly and offer a source of fresh good quality food surplus for everyone. In many cases the most frequent items moving through the fridge are fruit and veg. They operate on a trust basis and are not means tested.

What difference are they making?

In 2021, the Community Fridge Network redistributed around 3,150 tonnes of surplus food. That is the same as 7.5 millions meals! Each Fridge shares an average of 2.1 tonnes of food per month.

The Community Fridge Network have found that the fridges bring people together, address social isolation and provide people with the opportunity to access healthy food, try something new and save money.

North Stoneham Community Fridge

Our Community Fridge opened on Saturday 8th April 2023. You’ll find the fridge at YMCA Eastleigh. As you walk through the main doors, the fridge is on the right hand side. The fridge has been funded through a grant provided by the Smart Living Department at Hampshire County Council. We can’t thank them enough for helping us to get our project off the ground.

How can you help?

We will be filling the fridge twice a week with perfectly edible food left over from local supermarkets. Outside of these times, please feel free to place any items from the list below into the fridge that you don’t think you will consume.

Please Note – We are unable to accept any of the items below and any items which are beyond their use-by date:
